Hello Sailors Thai
Sailors Thai is a compelling chic Thai Restaurant in The Rocks area with plenty to offer. We were captivated by the building and the signage, and open restaurant capturing the freshness of Sydney Cove on a hot night; before a spur of the moment "let's do this" dining experience.
Sailor Thai features canteen style with long table and a menu that reflects fast, fresh and inspired renditions of food sold on the streets across Thailand. We find the restaurant intimate and the staff engaging. Authenticity of flavours is paramount; they don't dumb down the heat or spices. Standouts include the famous Slow cooked pork belly, Pad Thai, Aromatic southern style chicken (southern style being Thai southern style) and Stir fried spicy barramundi. Rewarding and nuances of romance.
Romantic lighting... Apparently there's anupstairs and a downstairs (I'm not sure where we were).
Pork Belly is an all time favourite; with a standout authenticity and alluring sticky sweet and sour sauce. Caramelised crunchy pork belly tender in the middle. Had to order more...
You can't beat southern style chicken; after enjoying loads of Belle's Hot Chicken we were appreciative also of another style. Spicy Thai chicken with hot sauce on the side and perfectly cooked rice.
Pad Thai can be done well or not; once you've tasted authentic Pad Thai you don't want to return to some average food court rendition. Here at Sailor Thai the Pad Thai is top notch; fresh, zesty, crunchy with right amount of heat and perfectly cooked chicken.
An open kitchen adds to the theatre although I wasn't sure who was watching who ha ha.
Thai beer of course!
Sailors Thai is a delightful restaurant with authenticity (have I mentioned that?), engaging staff, fine atmosphere and affordability in an area which can charge through the teeth.
